Calls to end ‘barbaric’ trophy hunting imports as MP backs campaign

An Ayrshire MP has joined the campaign to ban imports of ‘barbaric’ hunting trophies.

Allan Dorans, MP for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock, has shown his support for a ban on goods brought into the UK by British trophy hunters who kill endangered animals – including lions, elephants and rhinos – abroad for fun.

The law currently allows UK hunters to bring their “trophies” of animal heads and body parts back into the country for display at home.

A UK-wide opinion poll in March last year showed nearly 9 in 10 voters favoring a ban.

Now Mr Dorans is adding his voice to the list of campaigners and has received support from popular public figures including actress and presenter Dame Joanna Lumley and Downton Abbey star Peter Egan, whom he met last week.

MP Allan Dorans said: ‘It was a pleasure to show my support for the campaign to ban imports of hunting trophies and to meet actor Peter Egan, a longtime supporter of the rights and welfare of animals.

“Since the UK government announced its commitment to ban trophies in the 2019 Queen’s Speech, hundreds of animals have been killed by UK trophy hunters.

“It is clearly clear that the majority of voters support this ban, so it is high time to end this barbaric trade.”

Joanna Lumley said Mr Dorans represents “the 9 out of 10 voters who want to see an end to this barbaric and cruel industry”.

She said: ‘It should have been abolished a long time ago. What world do we live in where endangered animals can be killed for thrills by British trophy hunters?

“It is the height of cowardice. The MP for Allan Dorans has my full support for this campaign.

Peter Egan said he applauded Mr Dorans’ “courageous campaign”.

He said: “The US gun lobby is fighting efforts to ban this evil ‘sport’ because it says the ‘rights’ of hunters must be protected. But what about the innocent, helpless animals that are killed every year by British trophy hunters just for fun?

“MP Allan Dorans is absolutely right to stand up to industry lobbyists and stand up for the voiceless animals.”

Eduardo Goncalves, of the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, added: “Many people are shocked to hear that trophy hunting continues. They are even more shocked to learn that Britons are involved and that it’s not just Americans who shoot lions for so-called ‘sport’, selfies and souvenirs.

“MP Allan Dorans is absolutely right to reflect the views of local people on this issue. Trophy hunting is opposed by the vast majority of local voters.
