(City of Lānaʻi) – DLNR Forestry and Wildlife Division (DOFAW) announces that online applications for a 2022 Lānaʻi Axis Combined Deer and Bighorn Sheep Hunting Season will be available from Monday 10 January 2022. A ten dollar ($ 10.00) application fee will be assessed for each person requesting the hunt. Registration fees are non-refundable even if the hunt is canceled or if you cannot participate. A game mammal tag fee will be charged at the time of hunter registration. Residents of Hawaii will be valued at twenty dollars ($ 20.00) and non-residents of Hawaii at one hundred and twenty-five dollars ($ 125.00) for each Axis deer and bighorn sheep tag. Payment methods accepted for mammalian game tags include debit cards, credit cards, and cash.
It is important that hunter applicants obtain and pay attention to the hunt announcement, instruction sheet and addendum; and monitor online information for any changes that may be made to the application process and / or hunting season. Due to Covid-19, the 2022 Lāna’i Axis Deer and Mouflon Hunting Season may be changed, rescheduled, temporarily postponed, restarted or canceled at any time before or during the season for health reasons and / or security or for any other unforeseen event. the reasons. All Federal, State and County Covid-19 restrictions / guidelines apply and must be observed to participate in this hunt. Hunters will need to follow all guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Hunting dates, special conditions and procedures
In accordance with Title 13, Chapter 123, “Rules regulating game mammal hunting” (13-123-4), the following special conditions and procedures will be in effect for this hunting.
The 2022 Lāna’i Axis Deer and Mouflon Season will include four distinct hunts:
- the Archery hunting will take place over two nine-day periods and will consist of two draws. Subject to a limited participation for non-residents of Lāna’i.
- The first draw will begin on May 14, 2022 and end on May 22, 2022.
- The second raffle hunt will start on May 28, 2022 and end on June 5, 2022.
- the Youth hunting will be open from Wednesday to Sunday 8-12 June 2022. Subject to a limited participation for non-residents of Lāna’i.
- the Muzzle loader hunting will be open from Wednesday to Sunday June 15-19, 2022. Subject to a limited participation for non-residents of Lāna’i.
- the General rifle hunting will take place over eighteen consecutive weeks and will be open from Wednesday to Sunday, from June 22, 2022 to October 23, 2022. Subject to a limited participation for non-residents of Lāna’i.
The four hunts will be the subject of a draw. There will be no pending hunting opportunities for all four hunts. Hunters selected at random will receive an application card / permit by mail indicating the date of the draw.
Assistant hunters will only be allowed to accompany senior (65 years or older) or disabled hunters. Appropriate documentation is required at the time of hunter registration.
The 2022 Lāna’i Axis Deer and Bighorn Season will be a combined hunt. The bag limit for Axis deer will be three animals: two does and one deer of either sex. Hunters will need to purchase two Doe Tags before they can purchase an Axis Deer Tag of both sexes. If conditions permit, doe bag limits will be increased and hunters will receive free doe tags after purchasing all initial tags. The bag limit for Mouflon sheep will be four: two ewes, one Mouflon sheep of both sexes and one atypical ram. Hunters will need to purchase two Sheep Tags before they can purchase a Mouflon Both Sexes sheep tag. A non-typical ram tag will be issued free of charge if a Mouflon sheep tag is purchased. All atypical ram heads must be properly disposed of in the field or at the Lānaʻi Hunters’ Checkpoint. Tags are not transferable and are only valid for the specific hunt for which they were issued.
Archers must register for this hunt by submitting a request. The group size for archery hunting will be eight hunters. Due to a new format for archery hunting, a draw to assign hunting dates for the Archery hunting will be conducted. The hunters who ask for the Archery hunting will be allowed to apply and will be able to participate in either the Muzzle loader hunting or the General rifle hunting. Archery hunters can check in on the Thursday or Friday before the first day of the Archery hunting between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. or every day during the hunt between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to validate permits and acquire their badges. Hunter registration and harvest reports will be available through the ExteriorSpatial The Trails and Hunting mobile app and badge purchase may be available online at https://gohunthawaii.ehawaii.gov/public/tags, requiring hunters to only sign Pūlama Lānaʻi waiver forms at the checkpoint. Registration and tag purchase will continue to be available at Lānaʻi Hunter’s Checkpoint. The hours of operation of the control station can be changed depending on the levels of participation of the hunters and the options of registration / purchase of badges online. Archery hunters must leave the hunting area daily and report their catch or intention to hunt the next day provided their tags are not met.
Ax deer and bighorn sheep hunting opportunities for young hunters
- Young hunters must be 15 years of age or younger (HAR 13-123-2) on the date of the hunt, have a valid 2021-2022 or 2022-2023 Hawaii State Hunting License and be accompanied by ” a non-hunter adult (18 years or older) who also has a valid 2021-2022 or 2022-2023 Hawaii State Hunting License. Young hunters must apply to participate in this hunt.
- Young hunters will receive tags at the time of hunter registration. Tags are only valid for the specific hunt requested.
- Young hunters will be limited to carrying one (1) type of hunting equipment while in the hunting area. Blaze orange is compulsory for all young people and accompanying adults.
- Young hunters applying for the youth hunt will be allowed to apply and may be able to participate in archery and muzzleloader hunting or general rifle.
Interested hunters should request either the Muzzle loader hunting or the General rifle hunting but may not apply to both. Group size for muzzleloader and general rifle hunting will be eight (8). Mouth feeder candidates will be automatically assigned on the scheduled date. General rifle hunting the dates will be allocated by drawing lots.
Application for hunting
Due to Covid-19, hunters will need to register online for this hunt. https://gohunthawaii.ehawaii.gov. Please select the 2022 season Lānaʻi Axis Deer and Mouflon Sheep Season. the DEADLINE for the submission of applications will be 4:00 p.m. Friday February 11, 2022.
Public draws for the archery, youth hunts and muzzle-loading rifle will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 11, 2022, at the DOFAW Maui Base Yard in Kahului, with limited public participation. . the public drawing for the General rifle hunting the lottery will take place at noon at the above location. The public draw for Lānaʻi residents will take place at 9:00 am at the same location.
All eligible Youth, Muzzleloader and General Rifle participants must register either the Tuesday before their assigned hunt date between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. or Wednesday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at the DOFAW office in the town of Lānaʻi to certify hunter’s licenses and acquire their tags. Hunter registration and harvest reports will be available through the ExteriorSpatial The Trails and Hunting mobile app and badge purchase may be available online at https://gohunthawaii.ehawaii.gov/public/tags, requiring hunters to only sign Pūlama Lānaʻi waiver forms at the checkpoint. Registration and tag purchase will also remain available at Lānaʻi Hunter’s Checkpoint. The hours of operation of the control station can be changed depending on the levels of participation of the hunters and the options of registration / purchase of badges online. Once each hunter completes all assigned tags, they will not be eligible to participate for the remainder of the 2022 Lāna’i Axis Deer and Bighorn Season. Hunting units 1, 2 and 3 will be open for archery hunting. For the youth hunting season, the muzzle loader and general rifle, units 1 and 2 will be available for hunting Wednesday through Sunday.
