Guns and Lies in America: Deciphering Communal Gun Violence in California | Gun crime

Guns and Lies began in 2019 as a year-long project to investigate what has reduced the daily toll of gun violence in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, an area that had defied expectations. and experienced a dramatic drop in firearm homicides. The project has continued past its first anniversary to explore the convergence of gun violence, the coronavirus pandemic, and the movement for racial justice in the region. Now in its third year, the series has expanded its reach statewide, examining the dynamics behind the surge in daily gun violence and shining a light on community solutions.

Our stories delve into the intersection of gun violence with education, gentrification, policing, criminal justice reform, inequality and health. The project is committed to challenging myths and misconceptions about gun violence in national conversations by highlighting innovative people and programs that address violence, offering rigorous data-based analysis, and amplifying the voices of those affected by gun violence every day.
