Hunters and fishermen urged to exercise caution due to destruction of Hurricane Ida

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) warns hunters and fishermen that the danger lurks in debris and hazards left behind in waterways and hunting areas in the Southeast region of the State by Hurricane Ida.

The warning is especially important now that teal season opens statewide on Saturday (September 11).

LDWF recommends that hunters and fishermen be extremely careful and follow the public safety guidelines established in each parish. Be aware that emergency medical services may be limited and that there are only a few fully functioning hospitals in this area, according to an LDWF spokesperson.

Some parishes are also subject to curfews and athletes should be aware of this before venturing out.

Ida’s strike on August 29 caused enormous destruction in many areas, including toppling and breaking trees and tree branches in that area.

Hunters will undoubtedly observe many downed or damaged trees. There will also be trees about to fall, or broken branches hanging from other branches waiting for a breeze to push them to the ground. This makes awareness of your surroundings of the utmost importance.

Many areas where hunters have spent years hunting might look different due to the changing landscape. LDWF reminds hunters that it is important to have a working GPS and a charged cell phone in case of an emergency.

LDWF recommends that anglers and hunters let someone know where they are going and when they plan to return.
