Woman finds dead body of man shot and killed on popular hiking trail

A woman found the deceased body of a gunshot victim while walking on a trail near the Juniata Park section of Philadelphia on Sunday, reports say.

Police said the woman noticed the body after 8 p.m. and reported a doctor passing on East Wingohocking Street between Adams and Castor avenues, according to a report from NBC Philadelphia.

The doctor determined that the man had been shot at least once in the head. The police were then called.

Authorities are in the process of identifying the man but believe he was in his 20s, according to a report by 6ABC Action News.

Recovery of the victim’s body also required specialized equipment from the fire department as the body was in a remote location several meters below an overpass.

The investigation is still ongoing, but police were able to find casings at the scene indicating the man was shot at close range and not thrown at the scene.

Police also say the victim had a gun in his belt but was never removed during the shooting.

Newsweek contacted the Philadelphia Police Department for comment.

Earlier this month, Philadelphia suffered a mass shooting that left three people dead and 11 others injured. This shooting came at a time when there has been a reinvigorated debate about the use of guns in America.

The shooting took place on June 4 and Police Inspector DF Pace said officers deployed to patrol the busy area heard numerous gunshots near Second and South Streets and saw several shooters firing into the crowd.

In response, Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said more needs to be done to prevent illegal firearms from remaining in circulation, according to a report by 6ABC Action News.

“It’s gotten to the point where there’s no price to pay for carrying illegal weapons, so people carry them because they think nothing’s going to happen,” he said, then that he was returning to Philadelphia after attending the annual meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors in Reno, Nevada.

He also called for more legislation to get tough on those who use illegal weapons. “We need our prosecutor, our attorney general and the courts to help us.

“If the police are making arrests, that they took 6,000 guns off the streets last year, how many of those people actually ended up in jail? I don’t know, but I don’t think much.

Speaking to 6ABC Action News, he added: “I think those people who carry guns illegally, those people who are criminals who carry guns illegally need to be in jail.

“When the police stop them and take their illegal weapons, they shouldn’t be on the streets.”
